Planning Cinematography (Miss Georgiou)

1. Why is cinematography essential within a music video?
Cinematography is an important element within our music video as it gives us create influence as to what our audience watches and is drawn to with the video. As well as this the right cinematography is important as they can help tell the story of the film in the most effective manner possible helping to convey both the emotions and narrative from within the song.

2. What camera angles are you planning to use within your music video?
Close-up;
1. Is the shot conventional
A close up is conventional within every music video as it is important to have a close up shot of the artist, which helps the audience build a relationship with the artist. As well as this, especially within this song, a close up clearly shows and expresses the artists emotions whilst singing the song helping to emphasis and foreshadow that contained within the lyrics.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
It also helps promote the artist and their image making them easily recognisable within the press and public eye. As well as this the close ups too help the audiences create a closer bond with the artist and leading actresses connecting them to the narrative and therefore the song. Showing the artist up close, particularly within the soul genre helps promote the artist too as it allows the audience to understand the emotion behind the lyrics conveying and emphasising the song more effectively to the listener. This in turn represents the artist as open, honest and relatable to the audience members.

Birds eye view;
1. Is the shot conventional
As we are planning to use this shot to show the artist in bed the camera angle is conventional to the shot and scenario as a birds eye view can fully show the artist or actress's full body and the fact their lying down. However this angle is not conventional to the soul genre as soul music is expressive so the camera angles used tend to show the artist's face and emotions as opposed to including body shots.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
The use of a birds eye view will help show the person within the story as lonely and sad and longing for a lover which relates to the audience members who have gone through break up themselvesThis is conventional to the soul genre as the genre typical writes and relates to their audiences by portraying real life events and heartaches so the use of the bed a connection between loved ones helps show both love and emphasises being alone as a single person within a double bed relates to both the emptiness of her bed and love.

 Over the shoulder;
1. Is the shot conventional
This shot is conventional as it acts as a reflection of the artist just as the lyrics and songs do as within the soul genre the narrative and concept of the song are typically more personal than that of other genres.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
An over the shoulder shot is clever as it helps the audience see what the artist sees and from their perspective. By viewing right next to them both the artist and audience are looking at the same thing allowing the audience a deeper insight into that artist and their opinions. We chose to use a mirror as it is a chance to let the audience view the artist as they view themselves as see how the artist views themselves within the song. This is as when looking in a mirror someone is often critical towards themselves and so the song 'Only love can hurt like this' shows her looking at herself feeling scorned and potentially worthless which would relate to how other too feel about themselves making the artists relatable towards the audiences which would be comforting for them to know.

Establishing shot;
1. Is the shot conventional
An establishing shot is showed within the opening of a video to set the tone and help identify with the audience the scenario of the video and is therefore conventional to a genre such a soul which chooses to portray a narrative and often emotional story.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
This camera shot would then help define and represent the artist or the scenario they are playing either suggesting instant stereotypes as to whether the story is about someone rich or poor which helps intrigue and prove interesting to those who want to identify with a different class or be relatable if they can identify with that situation themselves.

Hand held;
1. Is the shot conventional
No, a handheld shot would be more commonly found within dance videos as it is often shaky and includes lots of movement which help reflects the dance element and the beat of the song. It also shows the scene correctly as it is how the audience would be portraying the scene helping them feel part of the scenario taking place within the video.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
Using a hand held angle shows how the artist too can be both scared and uneasy at times relating her to the audience making her seem ordinary and approachable which would heighten her popularity as she and her life is seen as attainable and it reminds the audience members that the artist is a normal person helping them to connect to the artist as a person enjoying the music as they enjoy the artist as opposed to just the song or the lyrics.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. You have considered the purpose of cinematography elements well and have focused on the effect that you will want to create well. However, you also need to relate your points back to the conventions of soul and images to support the points that you have made.

    Now you need to relate your explanations back to your lyrics, to demonstrate further understanding of why you have selected to use certain shots in your production.
