Planning Cinematography (Miss Georgiou)

1. Why is cinematography essential within a music video?
Cinematography is an important element within our music video as it gives us create influence as to what our audience watches and is drawn to with the video. As well as this the right cinematography is important as they can help tell the story of the film in the most effective manner possible helping to convey both the emotions and narrative from within the song.

2. What camera angles are you planning to use within your music video?
Close-up;
1. Is the shot conventional
A close up is conventional within every music video as it is important to have a close up shot of the artist, which helps the audience build a relationship with the artist. As well as this, especially within this song, a close up clearly shows and expresses the artists emotions whilst singing the song helping to emphasis and foreshadow that contained within the lyrics.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
It also helps promote the artist and their image making them easily recognisable within the press and public eye. As well as this the close ups too help the audiences create a closer bond with the artist and leading actresses connecting them to the narrative and therefore the song. Showing the artist up close, particularly within the soul genre helps promote the artist too as it allows the audience to understand the emotion behind the lyrics conveying and emphasising the song more effectively to the listener. This in turn represents the artist as open, honest and relatable to the audience members.

Birds eye view;
1. Is the shot conventional
As we are planning to use this shot to show the artist in bed the camera angle is conventional to the shot and scenario as a birds eye view can fully show the artist or actress's full body and the fact their lying down. However this angle is not conventional to the soul genre as soul music is expressive so the camera angles used tend to show the artist's face and emotions as opposed to including body shots.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
The use of a birds eye view will help show the person within the story as lonely and sad and longing for a lover which relates to the audience members who have gone through break up themselvesThis is conventional to the soul genre as the genre typical writes and relates to their audiences by portraying real life events and heartaches so the use of the bed a connection between loved ones helps show both love and emphasises being alone as a single person within a double bed relates to both the emptiness of her bed and love.

 Over the shoulder;
1. Is the shot conventional
This shot is conventional as it acts as a reflection of the artist just as the lyrics and songs do as within the soul genre the narrative and concept of the song are typically more personal than that of other genres.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
An over the shoulder shot is clever as it helps the audience see what the artist sees and from their perspective. By viewing right next to them both the artist and audience are looking at the same thing allowing the audience a deeper insight into that artist and their opinions. We chose to use a mirror as it is a chance to let the audience view the artist as they view themselves as see how the artist views themselves within the song. This is as when looking in a mirror someone is often critical towards themselves and so the song 'Only love can hurt like this' shows her looking at herself feeling scorned and potentially worthless which would relate to how other too feel about themselves making the artists relatable towards the audiences which would be comforting for them to know.

Establishing shot;
1. Is the shot conventional
An establishing shot is showed within the opening of a video to set the tone and help identify with the audience the scenario of the video and is therefore conventional to a genre such a soul which chooses to portray a narrative and often emotional story.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
This camera shot would then help define and represent the artist or the scenario they are playing either suggesting instant stereotypes as to whether the story is about someone rich or poor which helps intrigue and prove interesting to those who want to identify with a different class or be relatable if they can identify with that situation themselves.

Hand held;
1. Is the shot conventional
No, a handheld shot would be more commonly found within dance videos as it is often shaky and includes lots of movement which help reflects the dance element and the beat of the song. It also shows the scene correctly as it is how the audience would be portraying the scene helping them feel part of the scenario taking place within the video.
2. How the camera shot helps to represent your artist
Using a hand held angle shows how the artist too can be both scared and uneasy at times relating her to the audience making her seem ordinary and approachable which would heighten her popularity as she and her life is seen as attainable and it reminds the audience members that the artist is a normal person helping them to connect to the artist as a person enjoying the music as they enjoy the artist as opposed to just the song or the lyrics.

Planning Setting and Iconography (Miss Georgiou)

Introduction
1) Why are locations and iconography important within a music video?
Locations and iconography are important within a music video as they help set the tone of the video.

Setting- House
1) Why have you have chosen this location?
We have chosen to use the location of a house as it is a familiar location and so is relatable to our audiences. In particular we are going to be using the bedroom and bathroom. The use of the bedroom will convey the artists intimate relationship and well as emphasising how the artist is alone when she show her in bed without her partner. On the other hand the bathroom will give a personal deeper insight into the artist and her thoughts as it is often though that a person does some of their deepest thinking within the shower or bath. By therefore showing this and allowing the audience to intrude on the artist lets them feel more personal and involved within the artist making them feel closer to the audience allowing them to build a relationship as they are allowed to see the artist in a more intimate scenario.

2) What will take place in the shots that you will film?
In the bedroom the girl portraying the story will be shown to be cuddling her lover on the bed sharing their once intimate relationship allowing the audience to gain an understanding of the hurt and scenario behind the song so they can then contrast with the noticeable hurt apparent within the song. Therefore, the shot will then show the man within the narrative to disappear leaving behind the girl and therefore portraying how alone she is. She will also be shown to be looking in a mirror reflecting and analysing herself. On the other hand in the bathroom the shot will show the lady within the narrative in the bath. The shots will vary between closeups and mid shots to portray her emotion. In the bath around her will be pictures from her past with the leading man showing her to be reflective and nostalgic.

3) How does your location limit what you can do?
The location of the bedroom could prove difficult as with a confined space with windows and mirrors reflecting within the shot we need to ensure the camera cannot be seen within any of the shots. As well as this as a bedroom only features a bed there is only so many things the actress can do using the form of iconography without the narrative appearing forced. In terms of the bath the actress too can only lay down and so has limited movements she can do without loosing the dignity of the actress as although wanting her too appear exposed we don't want to actual expose her.

4) What health and safety risks does your location pose? How will you over come it?
Filming within bathrooms could prove difficult as the

5) How could the weather affect your filming? What back up plans have you in place?
As the shots are taken indoors the weather will not affect the shots we use. However if the shot uses natural lighting and we need to shoot a scene over two days if one of the days is overcast or miserable meaning poor lighting it could be notice and look bad when editing the final clip so to overcome this we will have to use artificial lighting.

Setting- Camden
1) Why have you have chosen this location?
We have chosen to use Camden as a location as it connotes the same ideas and appeals to the tastes and style of people who would like and listen to the soul genre. As well as this the use of Camden a busy central location will juxtapose the loneliness of the artist. As well as the the dense population and constant swarm of people will demonstrate how life moves and carries on around someone no matter what and so encourages those to recover quickly from heartache as standing still achieves nothing.

2) What will take place in the shots that you will film?

The shots at Camden will show the portrayal of the 'real artist' singing and performing. The shot will show show the artist standing central to the screen alone whilst the tourist of Camden are around her.

3) How does your location limit what you can do?

As Camden is a central London location it will be heavily populated and busy so although we want to show the artist surround by people whilst acting alone the location may be too busy making it difficult to portray her isolated feeling. As well as this we may not be able to find a quite backdrop to film on as all areas are busy the camera crew may be in the way and therefore may not be able to move around to achieve the different camera angles desired.

4) What health and safety risks does your location pose?

In terms of health and safety

5) How could the weather affect your filming? What back up plans have you in place?

As we are planning to film outside if the weather is rainy and miserable whilst were filming this may affect our video for a number of reasons. Firstly if we are unable to film quickly the artist's look in terms of hair and make-up may be altered through the rain. As well as this the rain may mark our screen of the camera causing a blurry shot. However as the song is an emotive song to overcome constant bad whether we have the opportunity to change the weather we want to use to rainy creating pathetic fallacy of the scene as the miserable rain would reflect her miserable mood she is portraying to the audience.

Iconography- Bed
1) What iconography have you chosen?
One chosen element of iconography we have chosen is a standard double bed.

2) Why you have chosen it? What does it tell your audience about your artists and is it conventional?
We chose to use this as it is an everyday ordinary item which will appeal and relate to our target audience as well as being able to connote both the ideas and scenarios of an intimate loving relationship and feelings of isolation and abandonment at the same time making it very versatile. This is conventional to the soul genre as the genre typical writes and relates to their audiences by portraying real life events and heartaches so the use of the bed a connection between loved ones helps show both love and emphasises being alone as a single person within a double bed relates to both the emptiness of her bed and love.

Iconography- Bath
1) What iconography have you chosen?
Another chosen form of iconography is a bath.

2) Why you have chosen it? What does it tell your audience about your artists and is it conventional?

For our narrative it made sense to use a bath as we wanted to convey a typical routine so as to be relatable to the audience. As well as this as when in the bath a person typically becomes most reflective so by showing her here we allow the audience to get a deeper insight into the featured ladies emotional state allowing them to feel closer to her and the song as they can understand the deeper emotional connections of the song. As well as this as the character will be nude whist in the bath she is shown to be more vulnerable and bare which should be endearing to the audiences who would feel empathy for her heartache and want to help as well as relating to times within their own lives they have been in similar states. A bath would therefore be seen as conventional to this genre as it corresponds to showing emotions and a persons true self which is what the songs and lyrics within the soul genre aim and intend to do.

Iconography- Mirror
1) What iconography have you chosen?
Another form of iconography chosen is a large antic mirror which comes as part of a dressing table.

2) Why you have chosen it? What does it tell your audience about your artists and is it conventional?

We chose to use a mirror as it is a chance to let the audience view the artist as they view themselves as see how the artist views themselves within the song. This is as when looking in a mirror someone is often critical towards themselves and so the song 'Only love can hurt like this' shows her looking at herself feeling scorned and potentially worthless which would relate to how other too feel about themselves making the artists relatable towards the audiences which would be comforting for them to know. A mirror is therefore conventional to the genre as it acts as a reflection of the artist just as the lyrics and songs do as within the soul genre the narrative and concept of the song are typically more personal than that of other genres.

Iconography- Pictures
1) What iconography have you chosen?
We have also chosen to use pictures of the couple from previous happier times in the form of print outs and polaroids.

2) Why you have chosen it? What does it tell your audience about your artists and is it conventional?

We have chosen to do this to convey happier times to demonstrate to the audience how deep and pure the love was. By doing this the audience would also route for the couple hoping they get back together and rejoin as a couple. This is conventional to the soul genre as the songs are often filled with emotions through reflecting back at happier times which juxtaposes their raw and hurt emotions.

Magazine Advert Analysis (Miss Miller)

1. What is the purpose of a magazine advert is?
There are numerous reasons as to why an artist may choose to create a magazine advert but mainly they do it in order to promote an artists album as through increasing it's recognition Palomas fans will be more aware of it and therefore buy it whilst new audiences would through constantly seeing the album realised the success of Paloma and may be swayed to buy the album subconsciously or in order to see what the fuss is about so in a way the album can act as a constant reminder of upcoming album. As well as this an artist may do this in order to reach a wider target audience as people that read magazine as well as listen to music.
To link in with other advertisements of the albums to create more marketing
To get support from other companies that could push sales further
To link in with any articles within the magazine on the artist (benefits for both magazine and artist)

Analysis of Paloma Faith
1. How does the advert promote the music genre?
Through showing many different personas of Paloma the genre is shown to be theatrical and dramatic focusing on portraying the emotion to each song as opposed to the pop genre which expresses the music through dance.
2. How does the advert promote the artist?
Paloma is shown to be a diverse character which is portrayed by the different characters she is featured as suggesting that she does not fit one category of an artist and therefore has a quality that will appeal to all. The vibrance of her hair suggests that she enjoys being centre of attention and the songs being about her through and through which is too shown by the multiple versions of her showing that she can be diverse and portray different scenarios. This attention seeking connotation is also shown through the design and layout with Paloma being position centre to the advert drawing attention to herself. As well as this the use of gold on the advert suggests the idea of wealth and success subtly telling her readers that she is a successful music artist helping to promote and gain recognition for both her and her previous work.
3. How does the advert attract an audience?
The advert will attract many different Paloma fans as Paloma is shown to be embodying many different characters but as herself suggesting to the audience that she enjoys featuring and portraying her music videos which will excite her fans who can look forward to watching her. As well as this the hints of gold suggest her previous success which will attract new audiences who may want to hear her music to understand her and 'jump on the bandwagon'. The characters and personas featured on the cover too are the ones that are featured within the songs so this would attract and lure in Paloma fans who could remember and try to pair each look with its correct song promoting both her and the songs within the album. An audience would also be attracted by the use of the '2 new tracks' shown on the advert which would persuade Paloma fans to buy the advert, even if they have the songs, in order to hear her new material and gain even more songs from Palomas portfolio. This also adds an exclusive element to the songs as the songs are only on the album so audiences will want to buy the album in order to gain rights to the songs and be the first ones to inevitably hear them.

Analysis of Adele
1. How does the advert promote the music genre?
The advert promotes the music genre as humble and honest. This is everything connoting to the advert abides the theme of black and white suggesting that is an uncomplicated portrayal of music honestly sharing peoples feelings and emotions how they are felt. The simplistic layout also suggests that this genre focuses on the music of the artist as opposed to the entertainment that the video offers showing, through the use of a close up, that the genre is about the artist rather than gimmicks aimed towards attracting viewers. This reiterates the idea of honesty as it shows the artist isn't afraid to expose themselves showing that the genre is a personal expression of an artist design to appeal to others through empathy and understanding that of which the listeners may be going through.
2. How does the advert promote the artist?
The advert promotes the artist through her previous success referring to her achievement as a 'grammy award winning' artist and the song that corresponds to her win. As well as this the use of design and layout of the advert shows the use of a close up to promote the artist as it gives artist recognition to the audience allowing them a better look at Adele as a person natural and as her self allowing the audience to build a relationship and connect with what they can see as the 'real her'. This is suggested by the choice of image which shows her not making eye contact with the camera suggesting that she is in fact a shy insecure person which relates to many women and men of her audiences who may find comfort that she relates to their issues despite being a megastar which therefore portrays Adele as ordinary and relatable as well as ordinary as she is shown as just an average person instead giving attention to the CD and therefore extraordinary voice. As well as this her choice to not look at the camera could suggest the idea that she was not ready for the photo to be taken instead looking to capture a moment of just adele pure and as herself suggesting that with her she is what your given she is a simple girl who doesn't need to rely on heavy advertising to succeed promoting the idea to be yourself as she is posed naturally and unforced.
3. How does the advert attract an audience?
The advert attracts an audience through the contrasting use of black and white. There is only three colours used- white, black and lime green which compliment each other they draw the eye and would stand out against the array of colour often used within artists magazine adverts. However the pops of green on the page would add to the draw drawing attention to '21' which is an easy and rememberable name for the album as well as the words 'available everywhere now' which would suggest to a passerby or reader of the advert that the artist; Adele, is in high demand and appeals to a mass audience which is why her music is so broadly stocked.

Analysis of music genres (Miss Georgiou)

1. How do music videos appeal to an audience?
Music videos can be crucial into the success of a song. They appeal to the audience giving them a visual to the song which provides extra entertainment when viewing and listening to the song. An unusual or fun video can increase the popularity of a song as

2. Analysis of a rap video- Drake (Over)

One way Drake appeals to his rap/pop target audience is through the mes-en-secene element of lighting. This is present when Drake is sitting on the bed singing to the camera. The use of dimly lit flashing lights draw the audiences focus towards drake and the narrative of the song yet they are subtle enough to not pull attention from Drakes performance.

Another use of mes-en-scene is the use of the micro element of setting. This is linked to the element of positioning of characters as the Over video is partly set within a bedroom with Drake positioned at the end of the bed singing to the camera. By using a bed as the setting suggests that he is singing about a relationship and may be feeling nostalgic now being in the bed now alone. As well as this as Drake is an emotional rapper the use of the bedroom shows how he may be feeling down, alone and in need of personal space to truely express and come to terms that his relationship is 'Over'.

Mise-en-scene is used in the form of hair, makeup and costume. As drake is a male he is limited to what can be done in terms of hair and makeup. However for the video Drake is a tracksuit and hoodie which is conventional to the rap genre. The grey colour of his tracksuit is used to reflect his down mood and grey area of his life where he may be unclear and confused. However the use of the tracksuit shows him as relaxed and comfortable, this could also show how he has given up and is staying at home rather than living his life as young single men stereotypically do.

In the video Over their is cinematography present in the form of close ups. This is stereotypical of the pop/rap genre as the song is about love ending and so the close ups allow Drake to portray his emotion to the camera. This allows him to create a relationship with the audience as the audience can relate to a time within their lives where they experienced the same emotions as a result of this, through being able to sense his emotion the audience can express empathy towards the artist.

As well as this cinematography is used within the Over video when a high angle is used to show Drake sitting on the bed. This subverts the stereotype of the rap/pop music genre where the men are often shown as through low angles to show them as superior as a having a great life they're audiences are expected to desire. To add to this typically rap artists are often shown with women and as social however Drake instead is presented as low suggesting hes down within himself as well as alone.

The editing within Over shows the use of a time lapse. This is seen as the people are shown to be circling Drake. This may be used to suggest how he may feel ambushed as well as being alone as the dancers as shown to be insync as one as he stands alone.

3. Analysis of dance video- Flo Rida (Club can't handle me)

The video for 'club can't handle me' is set in the typical dance setting of a club. This is conventional to the dance genre as a club is associated with dancing and having a good time which is what a dance video aims to connote. In terms of iconography the video contains the stereotypical objects of a rap genre as opposed to . For instance, on arrival to the club Flo Rida is seen getting out of an expensive sports car. This supports the stereotypes

The use of lighting within the video is typical of a dance genre as it features dim lighting with strobe lights which helps confirm the club setting. Through showing a club scene the aim is to make the audience want to go to a club and dance.

In the 'club can't handle me' the use of the mise-en-scene element of positioning of characters and objects shows Flo Rida position in the centre of the screen to draw attention to himself. This can also be linked to the mise-en-scene element of costumes as Flo Rida is dressed in a red jacket as red is an eye-catching colour and helps focus our attention on the artist. He is also accessorised with a large gold chain suggesting money as well as being eye-catching and making his differentiate from the crowd however the use of chains is more stereotypical to the rap genre. On the other hand he is in the same line as other clubbers making him seem more approachable and relatable.

Initial group planning ideas (Miss Georgiou)

1. Explain who your group members are?
My group is made up of Sophie Elliott, Shaun McFarlane and Devon Thomas. I have never previously worked with any of the group members before however we are all friends both within and outside of class so should be able to work together effectively.

2. What did you discuss in your first meeting?
Our first meeting we decided upon our music genre and we all agreed that the soul genre would be easier to portray and allowed us to be more creative in terms of narrative. Upon deciding a music genre we then looked at artists that were categorised under the soul genre such as Adele, Amy Winehouse and our chosen artist Paloma Faith. Choosing an artist was our most difficult step as their are so many and each has a unique take on the soul genre with their songs. At first we had selected Ed Sheeran but unable to commit to a particular song we then changed to Paloma Faith. This was as after looking at a selection of her current music videos such as Can't Rely on You, Upside Down and New York we all felt her songs were appropriately and creatively portrayed however the lyrics were broad enough for us to apply our own narrative ideas to them. In the end we chose the song 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' as with the message of love with the song it gave us the material and freedom to portray a love story perfect for our decision to create a narrative based music video.

3. What will you take forward into the next group meeting?
Now we have chosen an artist and our ideal song we would like to portray our next step in creating the music video is applying to copy right from Paloma's record  label Epic to hopefully receive permission to use the song. As well as this now we have a solid chosen genre we are going to research even further into the different current and previous soul genre artists and their videos trying to understand different codes and conventions within the videos and targeting a possible popular theme or idea running through each to identify and then include within our own video so we appeal to the fans and listeners of soul music to create a successful and accurate video that represents the soul genre and the tastes of its listeners. Finally through selecting a song we can then progress with our annotations of the lyrics outlining a concept for the lyrics and how we are going to portray each scene and lyric in a unique way whilst still performing in a way that foreshadows the lyrics and Paloma as an artist.

Group Meetings and Discussions
1. Individual feedback from the individual analysis of the chosen music genre and ideas gathered.
The soul music genre is stereotypically connected to that of the blues and jazz. This is confirmed within the music video with many of the scenes of 'Rehab' featuring a jazz band suggesting that the jazz element featured within the music video has heightened importance to nearly match that of the artist.
We also found that one of the main editing styles chosen within the soul genre are close-ups of the artist. This was proven within the 'Rehab' music video with the opening shot being a close up of Amy's face creating instant brand and artist recognition. It was also shown within Adele's song where Adele face is zoomed in during certain sections of the song which need her to convey her emotions such as parts which involves subtly links to being a scorned lover. Through seeing her emotions the audience are then able to empathise towards
the artist and the situation or relate to the feelings expressed that as an viewer they may have experienced themselves. Overall this helps contextually relate the audience and the artist making them feel they can relate helping create a relationship.

3. How has your research into your chosen music genre assisted you with planning your own music video?
My research has been very beneficial as through analysing successful music videos within the soul genre I have gained a better understanding of the styles and concepts within the videos that appeal to their and my target audience. The research was particularly beneficial within the mise-en-scene elements as the elements require in-depth decisions from an array of choices to choose from in terms of where to shoot and music video and what to include within it so by gaining knowledge from both the 'Rehab' and 'Rolling in the deep' videos has been very beneficial in hopefully helping me and my group make decisions faster and help create a more rounded clear image towards our music video. As well as this despite appealing to different target audience, although in the same musical genre, Ive found that there were a lot of musical tastes and decisions similar to each of the music videos helping confirm stereotypical venues and camera angles used within soul genre music.

The setting of the music video subverts to that stereotypically featured within the soul genre as Amy is shown within a charactered house which appears old and almost abandoned. This is stereotypical as the soul genre aims to connect to people through a mutual storyline or situation opposing ideas of the pop genre who appeal to their target audience by making them desire the lifestyle of the featured artist. The use of the everyday locations too such as the office makes the story relatable to the audience whilst the ending of the song being filmed within a supposed rehab centre conveys the lyrics as it portrays the centre as a bland prison almost facility explaining why Amy has reluctance to go.

The combination of the mise-en-scene element of hair, make up and costume has a detectable and noted 60s inspiration. This is noticed through Adele's beehive hair hair do and head band. This was a classic signature style of the 60's adopted by many women. The theme is continued with the use of natural make-up with pale skin and a statement winged cat eyeliner favourable at the time. To add to this the choice of clothing of a black dress makes Adele stand out from the white background drawing attention to the artist within a classic understated wayThe costumes used within the the video are very basic supporting the videos location. At the beginning she is shown with just a basic white tee and dressing gown, she then moves on to dress in a leather jacket before changing to a white shirt dress. All simple basic looks on Amy are achievable to the audience as well as making her look at one with the different locations used. In terms of hair and make-up Amy is shown sporting her signature cat eyed winged liner typical of the 60's genre. By presenting Amy in her usual fashion appeals to her existing fan base by playing upon her usual style. The 60's inspiration is stereotypical of soul genre confirms her musical genre and complements her soulful voice.

In terms of lighting and colour the video shows the introduction of lights with the drumming begins within the song flashes incoherence to the beat of the drum reinforcing and making the music seem more powerful. On the other hand the colour theme throughout is black and white showing a neutral concept and pallet. This makes the artist merge with the surroundings suggesting she is part of a larger picture as well as appealing to the 60's theme.

The positioning of characters and objects within the video is very important within portraying the song. Adele is shown to be sitting on a chair throughout her whole performance showing her as defeated as she remains stationary not able to conjure the energy for a performance. As well as this the singular chair within the middle of the room highlights how she is alone identifying with the concept of a scorned lover as she is completely alone without her partner to comfort her and be by her side. Amy is sat down throughout a lot of the video helping to blend her in with the surrounding band and scenery. Although she remains central to the screen helping to maintain the audiences focus she manages to do it subtly allowing the shot and concept of each location of the video to be noted. This is as the soul genre does very little in terms of routine performance instead the videos often just highlights artists musical talents. As well as this through sitting down shows how Amy is defeated reflecting the idea of the lyrics.

2. Storyboards, planning the production and filming the production.
Editing;
For our choice of editing we chose to use conventional shots of our music genre such as flashbacks, slow paced editing and jump cuts.  Flash backs are conventional to the soul genre as songs within the genre often portray negative emotions of hurting and despair usually linked to love and so the use of flashbacks are often used to show happier times to either contrast from the song or explain the situation so that the audience feel sympathy and a greater insight into the song and the artists lifestyle. This involvement can then help the audience gain a better grasp of the artist helping them create a relationship and they understand periods of their life just as with a friend making the fans feel the same and relatable to the artist making them appeal even more to audience members.
To add to this our choice of slow paced editing is very conventional to the soul music genre as they allow us to reiterate how the artist is feeling as slow shots in the video create a mellow yet monotonous feel within the video showing how life has stood still and is not carrying on at its usual face pace self as every moment alone is agonising and therefore drawn out. The slow paces used will appeal to our target audience as it allows us to make them feel chilled out and mellow. This will appeal to our audience as the purpose of a soul music is to relate to the audience through emotions and the lyrics so this slow paced approach will help them digest the lyrics easier helping them gain a better understanding of the song and artist allowing them to create a closer link and deep personal reference to the song.

Mise-en-scene;
For the videos miss-en-scene we first had to decided upon the setting and location.
We also chose to use Camden as a location as it connotes the same ideas and appeals to the tastes and style of people who would like and listen to the soul genre. As well as this the use of Camden a busy central location will juxtapose the loneliness of the artist. As well as the the dense population and constant swarm of people will demonstrate how life moves and carries on around someone no matter what and so encourages those to recover quickly from heartache as standing still achieves nothing.

In terms of iconography one main element chosen was a bed.
Another chosen form of iconography is a bath as this as the character will be nude whist in the bath she is shown to be more vulnerable and bare which should be endearing to the audiences who would feel empathy for her heartache and want to help as well as relating to times within their own lives they have been in similar states. A bath would therefore be seen as conventional to this genre as it corresponds to showing emotions and a persons true self which is what the songs and lyrics within the soul genre aim and intend to do.
Another form of iconography chosen is a large antic mirror which comes as part of a dressing table.

Lighting and Colour

The colours I have chosen to use within the music video are neutral tones such as cream white and beige when the leading woman within the narrative is portraying the 'after' scenario within the narrative to express and co pry how the woman is bleak, depressed and empty. This is shown through these colours as they are boring and plain showing no emotion of expressing anything which is how the lady feels as through being scorned by love she is an empty she'll of the woman she was before and these colours reinforce this idea. On the other hand when in reflection despite feelings of nostalgia we are trying to create and capitate the happiness and joy of the times together  so we will inject colour to show how the her partner was her world and allowed her to see the world in more fun and in a better way.
In terms of lighting we unwilling again on the situation where the actress is alone or the 'present time' we are choosing to use low level lighting or a singular light to foreshadow how the girl is some and also how she sees the world bleaker and as though these man was her  guiding lift or light of her life and so without him she has lost her way and has been lifey in darkness both physically and mentally. In contrast to their the lighting used when showing the flashbacks will be bright constant and intense to imitate and reflect the couples love.

Hair and Make-up
In terms of hair we will play upon the ordinary theme with a a non fussy tosseled hair style which would relate to audiences and represent the artist as ordinary and down to earth. This hair do is also current and relaxed and can be copied by women easily making the look more attainable which is interesting for audience members as they can become like the artist.
For our artists costumes we are going to appeal to the typical soul genre dressing our artist, when out, jeans and a beau tubal look which is no fussy and simplistic allowing the audiences to focus on the music and the use of iconography, a guitar, making the video about the music typical of many soul videos. This also makes the artist look approachable and down to earth as instead of looking pristine in designer clothes she seems relatable and representative of typical women which is what the video and narrative want to relate to and promote.
For makeup the artist will just wear simple natural make up which is currently in just enhancing the artists skin so they look natural and as themselves which would appeal to the audience members as it would represent the artist accurately allowing the audience to see the real them letting them create a relationship with the artist. The natural non fussy look also appeals to the audience as for many women they're day to day look is very minimal and simple so the artist is relatable and representative of real women.

3. How can your target audience build a relationship with your artist through image that you have selected?
Our artist despite appealing to the audience through applying themselves to an ordinary image relating themselves to the audience through enhancing and polishing the artist image the artist will too appeal to the audience through hopefully becoming a trend setter and role model making th audience admire and look up to them as we will present the artist in new trendy clothing and demonstrate current hairstyles and make up so the artist seems current.

·       1.Why are meetings and discussions important to carry out?
Meetings and discussions are important to carry out throughout the whole planning of our music video and ancillary texts as it allows us to contribute new and different ideas that will allow us to create final pieces that are most conventional to the genre and appeal to our target audience. As there are four of us, there will be a lot more ideas that we could consider using, which will avoid wasting time during group discussion stages.

·   2.Did your group work well together? As we are all friends outside of school I anticipated as a group we would work well together through mutual ideas or work dysfunctional as we would be unmotivated or more stubborn when proposing ideas. Thankfully I believed as a group we worked very well together with our personalities and traits enabling different skills and strengths to be brought to the group without anyone overshadowing the other. For instance Shaun instantly showed the most skill and understanding of computers completing photo shop and editing tasks at ease. Sophie had useful thoughts for conventional decisions whilst Devon was the force behind our group bringing directional skills that made us work time efficiently. Personally I had most of the creative ideas providing ideas and filming inspiration for our videos narrative and themes.
